Over the years, Randy has played a key role in numerous events, but he holds a special place in his heart for the Youth to Mountain Program. For many students, this program marks their first visit to Skyline Regional Park, offering them a unique opportunity to explore the desert environment. Randy recalls one particularly memorable experience when a group he was guiding spotted javelinas in the wild. The students were thrilled to see these fascinating creatures in their natural habitat, creating an unforgettable moment of excitement and connection with nature.
Randy also believes that the relationship between the WTMC and the Buckeye Elementary School District is vital for making a positive impact on students. Through this partnership, students gain a deeper understanding of the desert and mountains, learning the importance of preserving these natural spaces. Randy is passionate about ensuring the safety and protection of the desert ecosystem and the wildlife that calls it home. WTMC and volunteers are hopeful to expand the Youth to Mountains program to to include more schools from the surrounding area next year, allowing even more students to experience the beauty and significance of our desert landscapes.
Randy particularly looks forward to volunteering at events like the Full Moon Hikes, Stargazing Events, and, of course, assisting with the school groups. He plans to increase his time volunteering at our monthly Trail Clean Ups, helping keep our trails in pristine condition for future hikers. When Randy and his wife have visitors in town, they love to introduce them to the beauty of the White Tank Mountains by hiking at Skyline or other regional parks.
WTMC has had a positive impact on Randy and his wife’s lives as well. They feel that they owe a huge thank you to Sam and Deb Melfi (their mentors), Steve Rugh, Valerie Madarasz, and many others who have shared their knowledge of the desert and become lifelong friends.
Thank you, Randy, for your dedication and the lasting impact you have made on the lives of many young adventurers and nature enthusiasts alike!
